Supporting Mattie Freeman
A Community Effort to Help a Blind East Austin Resident Remain Safely at Home
Mattie Freeman is a lifelong East Austin resident who lived in her home for more than 60 years. After losing her sight due to a degenerative condition, maintaining her home became increasingly difficult. Over time, the property suffered from significant issues, including roof damage that allowed animals to enter the home.
Because the home is located within a floodplain, Ms. Freeman was not eligible for standard city-funded home repair programs. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, local businesses and community members came together as part of a Season for Caring initiative to help address her most critical needs.
The effort focused on improving safety and livability so Ms. Freeman could remain in the home she has known for decades. The story drew widespread local attention and highlighted the importance of community collaboration in supporting vulnerable residents.

Providing a New Roof for a Military Family
In another powerful example of community action, Driftwood Builders Roofing partnered with volunteers to install a new roof for an Army veteran’s widow at no cost.
The project was completed as a gesture of gratitude and respect for military service and sacrifice. Volunteers donated their time and expertise to ensure the home was safe, secure, and protected for years to come.
