St. Hedwig and the September 11, 2026 Storm

St. Hedwig is one of only five places in the whole of Bexar County with a confirmed hail report from that night.

At approximately 10:17 pm on Friday 11 September 2026, a trained weather spotter reported one inch diameter hail about two miles northeast of St. Hedwig. The National Weather Service logged it in its Local Storm Reports for that evening.

Source: National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio (WFO EWX) preliminary Local Storm Reports, product NWUS54 KEWX.

Some context for that figure. One inch - roughly a quarter in diameter - is the threshold at which the NWS classes hail as severe. It readily dents gutters, downspouts, vent metal and flashing, and it can damage older or already-weathered shingle. It is, however, at the lower end of what usually produces widespread roof damage on a sound modern asphalt roof, and it is noticeably smaller than the 1.75 to 2.50 inch hail reported around Converse a few miles west earlier the same evening.

What that means for your roof: it depends on the roof, not on the number. A report two miles away describes the storm, not your property. One inch hail on a twenty-year-old three-tab roof is a different proposition from one inch hail on a six-year-old architectural roof. The only way to know is for someone to look, and looking is free.

What Hail Damage Looks Like Up Close (Example Photograph, Taken in Schertz)

This is a reference photograph, not a St. Hedwig project. We have not published photographs of a St. Hedwig roof because we do not currently have any, and we are not going to imply otherwise. The image below was taken on a roof in Schertz, about six miles north of here. It is included because a hail impact looks the same whichever side of the county line it lands on, and seeing one is more useful than reading a description of one.

EXAMPLE PHOTOGRAPH, TAKEN IN SCHERTZ, NOT IN ST. HEDWIG. Hail impacts marked individually across one slope: granules driven off at each strike, with each mark recorded so the strikes can be counted into a total. Observed during a Driftwood Builders Roofing inspection in Schertz, Texas.

A fuller set, with captions covering how impacts are counted and what collateral damage looks like, is on the Schertz hail damage inspection page. The method is identical wherever we inspect.

What We Do in St. Hedwig

  • Free roof inspections, house and outbuildings, with a photo report you keep.
  • Hail and storm damage assessment, documented slope by slope.
  • Roof repair - leaks, flashing, penetrations, storm damage.
  • Roof replacement in architectural asphalt, Class 4 impact-resistant shingle, standing-seam and exposed-fastener metal.
  • Exterior work - siding, gutters, soffit and fascia, windows, exterior paint.

On insurance: we document the roof and give you the evidence. We do not promise a coverage outcome, we do not negotiate claims - under Texas Insurance Code §4102.163 a contractor bidding the work may not act as a public adjuster on it - and we do not absorb deductibles, which is illegal in Texas under §707.003.

Roof Repair in St. Hedwig, Done Right the First Time

Most St. Hedwig roofing calls start with a leak, and about a third of the roofs we inspect need a repair, not a replacement. We get on the roof, find the true source of the water rather than just the ceiling stain, and show you photos before any work begins.

On older homes, most leaks trace back to a chimney flashing, a plumbing vent boot, a tired valley, or a section of failed sealant, not the whole roof. We fix the real problem with materials matched to your specific roof, whether it is asphalt shingle, tile, standing seam metal, or flat and low-slope TPO.

If a repair is only a short-term patch, we tell you honestly and put the replacement number beside it so you can decide with real figures in front of you. When a storm is behind the damage, we document it with photos and help with your insurance claim.

Roof Replacement in St. Hedwig, No Runaround

When a St. Hedwig roof has genuinely reached the end of its life, a full replacement is better long-term value than paying for repeated repairs. Most homes are a one to three day job, and many single-story roofs are finished in a single day. We never leave a roof open overnight.

Every replacement includes a full tear-off to the deck, a decking inspection with any rotted sheets replaced at a stated per-sheet rate agreed up front, new leak barrier and underlayment, new flashing, drip edge and valleys, balanced attic ventilation, and a thorough magnetic nail sweep and cleanup.

For most homes, architectural asphalt shingles such as GAF Timberline HDZ give the best balance of value and hail resistance, and impact-resistant Class 4 shingles often earn an insurance discount. Standing seam metal reflects more heat and lasts 40 to 70 years. There is no deposit; you pay once the finished roof passes inspection.

What Is Included in a St. Hedwig Roof Replacement

01

Full Tear-Off

We remove the old roof down to the deck so we can inspect and rebuild the system correctly.

02

Decking Inspection

We check the decking and replace any rotted sheets at a stated per-sheet rate agreed up front.

03

Leak Barrier & Underlayment

We install premium leak barrier and underlayment for a watertight foundation.

04

New Flashing & Ventilation

We install new flashing, drip edge, and valleys, and balance the attic ventilation.

05

Shingle or Metal Install

We install your chosen system to spec, six nails per shingle, every course.

06

Ridge Cap & Cleanup

We finish the ridge, run a magnetic nail sweep, and haul away every scrap.

How to Decide Between a Roof Repair and a Roof Replacement

Repair when the damage is isolated, one leak, one flashing, a handful of shingles, and the surrounding roof still has life. Replace when shingles are brittle across whole slopes, when a tile or metal system has failed, or when hail hit more than one elevation. A repair is almost always cheaper up front, but if the roof is near the end of its life, replacing once beats paying for repeated repairs.

Other Roofing and Exterior Services in St. Hedwig

Driftwood Builders Roofing is a full-service roofing and exterior contractor in St. Hedwig. Alongside roof repair and roof replacement, we handle the work most roofers send elsewhere.

Siding Installation & Repair

James Hardie fiber cement and vinyl siding, installed and repaired. Storm damage usually hits the roof and siding together, so we assess both in one visit.

Gutter Installation

Seamless gutters and gutter guards that protect St. Hedwig’s older homes and mature-tree lots from water damage. Ask about adding gutters when we quote your roof.

Skylight Installation & Repair

New skylights installed and leaking ones repaired. The best time to add one is during a roof replacement, while the deck is open, so it is flashed properly.

Metal Roofing

Standing seam metal, the most popular upgrade from tile on older homes. Lighter on an old deck, lasts 40 to 70 years, and reflects Austin heat.

Tile Roof Repair

Cracked and slipped clay and concrete tile repaired, along with the underlayment beneath it, which is where most tile roofs actually leak.

Commercial & Flat Roofing

TPO and other flat and low-slope systems installed and repaired for commercial buildings and modern flat-roof homes around central Austin.

Free Roof Inspections

Every inspection is free, including a full photo report and the remaining roof life in writing. We get on the roof, not just look from the driveway.

Storm & Insurance Claims

We document storm damage, meet your adjuster on the roof, and make sure the claim reflects the real damage. You file as the policyholder, we handle the roof side.

St. Hedwig Roofing Questions, Answered

Do you serve St. Hedwig, Texas?

Yes. St. Hedwig sits in our northeast Bexar County service area alongside Converse, Schertz and Universal City. Inspections are free and include a photo report you keep.

Did St. Hedwig get hail on September 11, 2026?

Yes. A trained weather spotter reported one inch diameter hail about two miles northeast of St. Hedwig at roughly 10:17 pm on September 11, 2026, and the National Weather Service logged it. One inch is the threshold at which hail is classed as severe, and it is capable of damaging soft metals, older shingle and collateral components, though it is at the lower end of what typically causes widespread roof damage.

Is a rural property treated differently?

The roof assessment is the same. The practical differences are access and scale – longer drives, outbuildings, metal roofs on barns and workshops, and sometimes a propane tank or a well house that also needs looking at. We inspect the outbuildings as well if you want them included, because hail does not stop at the house.

Does St. Hedwig require a roofing permit?

St. Hedwig is a small incorporated city in Bexar County and permitting requirements for re-roofs are limited compared with a larger municipality. We confirm current requirements with the city before starting rather than assuming, because small-city rules change more often than people expect.

Do you install metal roofing in St. Hedwig?

Yes, both standing-seam and exposed-fastener systems. Exposed-fastener metal is common on outbuildings and workshops around St. Hedwig, and standing-seam is increasingly chosen for houses. We also install architectural and impact-resistant Class 4 asphalt shingle.
